Irish TV License

Understanding the Irish television license requirements

Irish TV License

Television License Requirements

In Ireland, owning a television or any device that receives television programs — whether it's a traditional TV set, a laptop, or a tablet — requires individuals to have a valid television license. The Irish television license system is in place to fund public service broadcasting and ensure that quality programming is accessible to all citizens.

Key Requirements

  • Household License — A television license covers an entire household rather than being linked to a specific device. One license covers all TVs and devices capable of receiving broadcasts within the same premises.
  • Annual Renewal — Licenses must be renewed annually. The fee can be paid for one year, six months, or three months.
  • Exemptions — Free licenses available for people who are blind or visually impaired, people in residential care facilities, and those registered as sight and hearing-impaired.

Penalties for Not Paying

  • Late Payment Fees — Applied if payment is not made by the due date. The amount can increase over time.
  • Fixed Payment Notice — If found watching live TV or catch-up services without a valid license, you may receive a Fixed Payment Notice of €160.
  • Prosecution — Persistent non-payment can lead to prosecution with fines up to €1,000 plus court costs. In extreme cases, imprisonment may be considered.
  • Inspections — Television license inspectors have the authority to visit premises to check if a license is held.
