ITALIAN CONSULATES

IMPORTANT: YOU MUST USE THE CONSULATE WHICH HAS JURISDICTION OVER YOUR PERMANENT RESIDENCE

SCHEDULING A CITIZENSHIP APPOINTMENT

If you're considering applying for Italian dual citizenship through your local Italian Consulate, you must first create a Prenot@mi account. You can easily register online at https://prenotami.esteri.it/. Scheduling a citizenship appointment through a US Italian Consulate is often one of the most difficult parts of the Jure Sanguinis process. Consulate appointments are not always available to book. For many consulates, you will login to the scheduling portal and find all of the appointments have been taken. Some consulates, such as New York, have moved to a wait list. If your consulate has a wait list, simply get in line and you’ll be notified when it’s your turn to have an appointment. The wait lists often have thousands of people in line, so you can expect a multi-year wait.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

You are required to use the consulate which has jurisdiction over your permanent residence. This means if your consulate has a long wait, you’re forced to wait. The only way around the Italian Consulate is to either apply in Italy, or obtain substantial evidence and hire an Italian attorney to represent a petition for citizenship in the Italian court system.

Once you finally have a consulate appointment, the consulate legally has another 24 months to process your file. At any point during that time, you could be contacted and asked to provide more information.

Remember, persistence is key in securing an appointment. It's recommended to start looking for an appointment early in your document acquisition process, given the long lead times at many consulates.

If you can, we always recommend having your citizenship processed in Italy instead of dealing with an Italian Consulate.
