REACQUIRE ITALIAN CITIZENSHIP
REACQUIRE ITALIAN CITIZENSHIP
IF YOU BECAME A CITIZEN OF ANY COUNTRY OTHER THAN ITALY BEFORE 1992, HERE IS HOW TO REACQUIRE ITALIAN CITIZENSHIP
BEFORE AUGUST 16, 1992
If you were an Italian citizen who naturalized in another country before August 16, 1992, you automatically relinquished your right to Italian citizenship. This even applies to Italian children who were naturalized with their parents when brought to other countries. However, the good news is that the process of reacquiring Italian citizenship is relatively straightforward.
If you are residing in a country outside of Italy, you can initiate the process by notifying your local consulate of your intent to reacquire your Italian citizenship. Upon notifying the consulate, you will have one year to establish permanent residency in Italy. The citizenship process will then be carried out by the comune of your choice. Note that you need not inform a consulate of your intent before traveling to Italy; you may start the process at the comune once you arrive in Italy.
It is mandatory to complete the reacquisition of Italian citizenship through a comune in Italy and not an Italian consulate.
If you have children born after your naturalization, they will not be eligible for citizenship by birthright. However, they can obtain expedited naturalization by learning Italian to a B1 level and establishing permanent residency in Italy for three years.

AFTER AUGUST 16, 1992
If you became a citizen of another country after August 16, 1992, you did not lose your Italian citizenship! Italy began allowing dual citizenship via naturalization after this date. This means that your children will also be eligible for Italian citizenship through you.
Remember to register your children's births with your Italian consulate. Failure to do so before they turn 18 will necessitate their undergoing the lengthy Jure Sanguinis process to claim their right to Italian citizenship.
